Record-Breaking Performance Across All Metrics

Vienna has confirmed 2025 as its most successful year ever as an international meeting destination, hosting 7,196 congresses and corporate events that generated more than two million visitor overnight stays. The city reported new highs across all key performance indicators, with 2,545,348 bed nights representing a 27% increase compared with 2024, while participant numbers reached 794,812, up 19%.

The meetings sector contributed EUR 1.7 billion to Austria's GDP, secured 19,300 year-round jobs and generated EUR 348 million in tax revenue nationwide, with EUR 39 million allocated directly to Vienna.

International Congresses Drive Economic Impact

International congresses proved to be the main growth driver, accounting for almost two thirds of Vienna's EUR 1.7 billion GDP contribution in 2025. Of this amount, around 59% (EUR 1 billion) was attributable to congresses, with the majority (EUR 828 million) coming from international formats.

"In 2025, we further consolidated our standing as a leading international meeting destination. Record numbers of congresses, corporate meetings, overnight stays and participants induced billions in economic impact, securing thousands of jobs well beyond the hospitality sector," said Norbert Kettner, CEO Vienna Tourist Board.

Medical Congresses Dominate Event Portfolio

The congress sector was dominated by human medicine events, which accounted for 48% of all overnight stays generated by congresses. Formal and natural sciences represented 12%, followed by humanities at 10% and technology at 7%. As a United Nations headquarters city, 7% of Vienna's congresses were linked to the organization.

The breakdown of 2025 events showed 2,614 congresses (up 19%) and 4,582 corporate events (up 4%). Congress delegates accounted for around 1.7 million overnight stays, while corporate event participants generated approximately 838,500 overnight stays, meaning every eighth overnight stay in Vienna is linked to meetings.

Strong Visitor Satisfaction and Premium Positioning

A study by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research surveyed 819 meeting participants, revealing a highly international profile with 63% from Europe, 15% from Asia and 9% from the USA. Some 93% of participants would recommend Vienna as a destination, while 90% planned to return for future visits.

The city's premium positioning was reflected in accommodation choices, with 44% of meeting participants staying in four- or five-star hotels. These categories account for around 60% of Vienna's 84,583 available beds across 42,426 rooms at 450 accommodation providers.

Strategic Funding and Future Pipeline

Vienna deploys the Vienna Meeting Fund as a strategic tool to secure international events. The funding scheme targets multi-day international meetings held outside peak months (May, June, September, October) where at least half of overnight stays come from international participants. The full EUR 60,000 per event funding requires Green Meeting or EcoEvent certification.

By March 2026, more than 1,300 applications had been submitted, with over 900 meetings approved for the May 2021 to December 2028 funding period. Of the EUR 12 million allocated across three tranches, almost EUR 2 million remains available.

Looking ahead, 2026 will feature close to 60 events with more than 1,000 participants, including four large-scale congresses exceeding 10,000 visitors. The Vienna Convention Bureau has secured around 100 international events with almost 125,000 participants scheduled between now and 2031, with more than 300 applications in the pipeline extending through 2038.
